Today, I want to say a few words to audiophiles who enjoy vinyl:
This album, produced by Jürg Schopper — nicknamed “Mr. Switzerland” — is truly top-notch. 🤔
I imagine many of you may not be very familiar with cellist Roland Fischlin and pianist Urs Jaeggi. In 1987, the two of them recorded a highly representative “Cello and Piano Recital” at Radio Bern in Switzerland. In addition to Saint-Saëns’s “The Swan” — one of the most beautiful melodies we all know well—they also performed works by Falla, Debussy, Bach, Gershwin, and works by composers from various schools, all performed with a mastery as transcendent as the Eight-Form Buddha Palm. These two reclusive masters possess extraordinary skill; listening to this album is sure to be a revelation.
The standout track is “Konstellation I & III,” personally arranged by pianist Urs Jaeggi. The rhythm of this piece is simply off the charts! This move is akin to unleashing the Ninth Form: Ten Thousand… Buddhas… Pay Homage… to the School 😲
“Mr. Switzerland” used a Studer A80 vinyl mastering machine to meticulously craft the original stereo master tapes; the sound quality and effects are undoubtedly at the absolute pinnacle of analog recording 👍. At home, I use a Linn Sondek LP12 with Ekos I and Ekstatik tonearm and cartridge, connected via a Gryphon moving-coil phono preamp to an Audio Note OTO phono SE integrated amp, driving the Fyne F700 speakers reviewed in this issue. Although my setup is just a small system, but the moment I turned it on, it was as if I’d invited two musicians to perform live in my humble abode. To sum up the sound in a word:

This vinyl record, released as part of the ‘Swiss Artists Series’ by the Swiss audiophile label Triston Masters, features a ‘Cello und Piano Recital’ performed by cellist Roland Fischlin and pianist Urs Jaeggi.
This record is of great historical value, having been recorded live at Radio Bern in Switzerland in 1967. Triston Masters has utilised the original master tape for direct-to-vinyl cutting. No digital equipment was used at any stage, ensuring the purest analogue sound quality. Limited to 200 copies worldwide, it is pressed in Switzerland using 180g audiophile-grade vinyl.
The first track on Side A, Camille Saint-Saëns’ *La Cygne* (*The Swan*), is a Cantonese ballad familiar to many Hong Kong listeners, making it feel particularly close to the heart… The spatial capture in this live recording is nothing short of exceptional.
Roland Fischlin’s performance exudes the ultimate sense of warmth. The mid-to-low frequency resonance of the cello possesses remarkable depth and definition; the minutest details of the friction between bow and strings are rendered with exquisite precision, and the texture of the bowing feels incredibly authentic.
Urs Jaeggi’s piano accompaniment boasts a crystalline tone, rich in texture. Thanks to Analog Masters’ exceptionally high dynamic range, the depth of the piano’s lower register and the overtones of the upper register create perfect layering within the soundstage.
Side B offers listeners a different experience; the Hi-Fi quality of the Gershwin, Debussy and Kodály pieces is even more pronounced than on Side A. The imaging of the cello and piano is precise, whilst the depth of the soundstage and the natural reverberation of the Bern Radio Studios are perfectly reproduced, providing listeners with an intimate, immersive sensation as if they were right there in the concert hall.
This ‘Roland Fischlin and Urs Jaeggi Recital’ album is not only a high-calibre chamber music dialogue, but also Triston Masters’ ultimate tribute to the art of fully analogue vinyl production.
