Review Kogan Volume 9 by Stephen Lee Hong Kong

Kogan Vol 9 Review Stephen Lee533 02.xin chang chang pian p193 originalFor many vinyl and classical music enthusiasts, the Swiss record label Triston is a real gem and deserves our support. Founded by Jürg Schopper, the label adheres to several uncompromising principles. Firstly, all productions are entirely analogue. Secondly, whether it be audio tapes or vinyl records, the source material is always the original master tape or a master tape created by the label itself. And finally, the entire process – from recording and mastering, through the cutting of the lacquer discs and the pressing of the records, right through to the recording of the audio tapes – takes place in Switzerland. All recordings are first-time releases and are therefore particularly valuable.

Take, for example, the ‘Swiss Radio’ series. Triston acquired the production rights and the original master tapes for various music albums from Radio Zurich, Radio Bern and Radio Lausanne, and produced limited editions of 250 or 300 copies each on 33 1/3 rpm vinyl. My copy of Kogan’s interpretation of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is the ninth volume in this radio series and is limited to 300 copies. The recording was made live on 26 September 1963 at the Pavillon in Montreux, Switzerland, and features a brilliant ensemble performance by the Orchestre National de Paris under the baton of the Polish-American conductor Skrowaczewski. Kogan, the world-class violin virtuoso from the former Soviet Union, is such a virtuoso that I need say no more about him. His powerful, masterful and profound interpretations are utterly captivating! Skrowaczewski’s performance with the Orchestre National de Paris was incredibly detailed and stirring, complementing Kogan’s playing perfectly. The live atmosphere of the concert was captured so vividly that even the audience’s coughs could be heard with remarkable clarity.

The back of the record states that this vinyl was cut using a Studer C37 Neumann VMS-70/FloKaSon cutting machine, mastered by Stamper Discs Ltd. in the UK, and pressed by MEK Vinyl GmbH in Switzerland from 180g pure vinyl. This is testament to Triston’s meticulous approach to production, as evidenced by the smooth surface of the record and the virtually noise-free sound!
