Newly manufactured, high-precision main bearing with bronze base plate.

The platter bearing is the heart of every drive system. Thorens played a key role in developing the bearing for the TD 124, but the bearing itself was manufactured and sourced from suppliers. Initially, from around the middle of the Series I, plastic inserts were used. This was an excellent solution from a decoupling perspective, but the combination of the high rotational force of the drive system and insufficient tolerances of the supplied parts inevitably led to excessive wear. Therefore, Thorens replaced the plastic bearings with bearings with sintered inserts that served as oil reservoirs. Prolonged use of these bearings led to structural degradation of the bearing, drying out of the oil, and erosion and wear of the inserts. Under these conditions, noise increases significantly, and rotational accuracy can no longer be maintained.
We can now offer the main platter bearing not only as a spare part, but also as an upgrade.
This main platter bearing is manufactured for us in Switzerland according to the highest quality standards. It is 100% interchangeable with the original bearing. It now comes with a bronze base, resulting in even smoother mechanical operation.
Replacing the main platter bearing for all TD 124 Mark I models with serial numbers up to circa 25000 is urgently recommended – these models have the plastic bearing inlays. Moreover, we highly recommend a bearing replacement - independent of the serial number, and including the Mark II series – where there is excessive bearing play.
The set includes a complete main platter bearing with shaft, an addtional oil gasket und a bottle of Thorens oil.
